78 JERSEY BREEDERS NAMED AS HONORARY CHAIRS
FOR 2005 NATIONAL HEIFER SALE

March 10, 2005, Reynoldsburg, Ohio—The Board of Directors of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) has named the 78 men and women who served as chairs of the first 47 National Heifer Sales as Honorary Chairs for the 48th sale scheduled for this coming June.

They will be recognized for their collective efforts to develop the National Heifer Sale into a premier Jersey breed promotion event that also has supported the breed improvement mission of the national Jersey association.

On June 25—for the first time in the sale’s history—all heifers are being donated for the benefit of national Jersey youth development programs and the AJCC Research Foundation.

Ten percent (10%) of the proceeds will go to the national Jersey youth fund (to a cap of $25,000). The balance will be added to the endowment of the AJCC Research Foundation, to provide greatly needed resources to support applied research on Jersey cattle and Jersey milk.

As of today, 71 Jersey breeders and two state organizations have pledged a heifer to be sold at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Washington, Penna.

“The National Heifer Sale was created in 1957 to provide funds for our Jersey youth program,” explained AJCA President Donald S. Sherman, Hilmar, Calif. “It has been successful beyond our wildest dreams, raising over $420,000 to encourage young people to pursue careers with Jersey cattle.

“When it became obvious two years ago that we also needed to increase the Jersey Foundation endowment, the Board decided—just for one time—to ask members of the Jersey community to dig deep and give a heifer to be sold 100% for youth work and research.

“Our goal is to raise $250,000 on June 25,” Sherman added. “Generating that much money from one sale would not be conceivable except at the National Heifer Sale. And for that, we have to thank each and every person who chaired the sale in years past.”

The most recent 10-year average for the sale is $3,006.12 on 564 heifers. In all, 2,173 heifers have been sold for an average price of $1,938.82 since the first sale in 1957.

About the AJCC Research Foundation

Founded in 1967, the AJCC Research Foundation has provided seed money for well-designed scientific investigations related to high-priority areas affecting the Jersey breed of dairy cattle:

  • Nutrition of high-producing Jerseys (particularly practical feeding methods to maximize production of valuable milk components);

  • Factors affecting yield of products manufactured from Jersey milk;

  • Factors affecting net income, longevity, and lifetime profit;

  • Breeding plans to optimize genetic gain while maintaining genetic diversity;

  • Biological and economic efficiencies of Jerseys; and

  • Factors affecting management of Jersey calves.

An advisory committee that includes Jersey producers, dairy scientists, and allied dairy industry representatives evaluates proposals. The final decision on funding is made by the Directors of the American Jersey Cattle Association.

The next Request for Proposals will be issued in August, with projects due by December 1. Detailed information about the Competitive Grants Program can be found on the web site or requested from Cari W. Wolfe, Director of Research and Genetic Programs Development, at 614/861-3636.
