Resolution on True Protein Testing and Reporting

Adopted by the Boards of Directors
of the American
Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc.,
November 1999
Whereas Federal Milk Market Order reform will implement multiple component pricing in seven of the 11 consolidated orders, covering approximately 85% of all FMMO milk production; and

Whereas producer protein prices will be determined by testing for true protein content, instead of total protein content as is currently done; and

Whereas total protein testing significantly overestimates the actual protein content in cow milk; and

Whereas true protein provides a more correct market signal to dairy producers; and

Whereas information providers to the dairy industry currently measure and report protein production on a total protein basis; and

Whereas it is essential for dairy business owners and milk processors to have the most accurate information on protein content for use in making management and procurement decisions; and

Whereas providing such information will require concerted effort from all segments of the dairy industry;

Now therefore be it resolved that the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc. endorse the immediate implementation of the true protein testing protocol throughout the industry and encourage all dairy industry cooperators to switch from total to true protein testing and reporting as soon as possible.
